With over 350 millions of users, Facebook is no doubt the most popular online social network. Until now, you had to type www.facebook.com to log in and see your profile. But with the growing success of tiny “computers” with tiny keypads such as netbooks or mobile phones (iPhones, Blackberry etc.), Facebook decided to create a shorter domain name. The goal? A faster and easier access to Facebook, for people connecting via mobile phones.
The Montenegro extension .ME has been chosen for the new version of www.facebook.com. If you now type the internet address www.fb.be you will automatically be directed to the Facebook’s frontpage. Surely this extension has been chosen because of its double meaning, the allusion to the English word “me” (myself). This fits perfectly for a social network, where “I” rules!
Given the popularity of Facebook, there’s a big chance this will increase the number of .ME registrations. Many other social networks could be interested as well in registering domain names such as love.me, advice.me or share.me etc.
The .ME extension is open to all, and there is no specific condition to register a domain name under this extension.
