With the expansion of « Smart phones » ( I-Phone, Blackberry etc.) and their growing popularity, the .MOBI register is becoming more and more successful. Indeed, made specifically to surf the Internet through mobile phones, .MOBI has been approved in 2005 by the ICANN as the reference extension for mobile phones. First, only brand holders could apply for a domain name under this extension, but since September 2006 everybody is allowed to do so and this, without any specific registration conditions.
The most positive aspect of this extension is definitely the quality of its connection for internet users surfing .MOBI websites. First, these websites will be easier to find than others since search engines like Google will automatically select them first, as soon as the research is done from a mobile phone. Also, since they are specifically made for a mobile support, .MOBI websites won’t be disturbed by network issues.
If one believes the long study of the analyst Morgan Stanley, in 5 years time, there will be more users surfing the Internet via their mobile phone than via a classic computer! And if this really happens, .MOBI has beautiful days ahead…
