Things have changed since 1992, when the National Estonian Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics was still handling the extension of the country, .EE. Since the 5th of July not only the registrations rules are changed and became more flexible, but the Estonian Internet Foundation also became the new Register for .EE.
What changes concretely …
1- Individuals and foreign companies will be able to register domain names ending in .EE, as long as they can provide a local admistrative contact.
2- One person will have the possibility to register several domain names under this extension.
3- The choice of domain names is totally free.
In order to register a .EE, companies will have to send to the Estonian Internet Foundation a registration form filled and approved with the signature of one of their legal representative, a copy of the company’s registration certificate and a copy of the signatory’s ID; a paper informing the registrar that he has the authorization to register the concerned domain name will also be necessary.
By establishing these new registration rules, the Estonian register had in mind to liberalize its system but above all, to promote its extension on an international level. According to the estimations following the taking place of those new rules, they did it ! Within only 2 days, 1329 new domain names have been registered, “which is about as many as were registered in the previous two months combined”, as the register says on its official website.
Success shows up and Estonia easily won her bet!!
