Few days ago, the ICANN released on its official website the 4th version of applicant’s guide, a guide that describes the process of applying for new generic top-level domains. Explanatory notes as well as a detailed analysis of comments received are coming along with this guide.
On its website, the ICANN underlines that the need of constant improvements and the will to move to completion are dear to this program. That is why all the received comments have played a major role in the improvement of this guide, just like the precious collaboration of the ICANN with different working groups such as TDG or VI-WG.
The ICANN points one by one the main new points of this guidebook’s 4th version. Here they are:
- The Incorporation of trademark protections, including improvements to the Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS), the Trademark Clearinghouse (TM Clearinghouse), and the Post-Delegation Dispute Resolution Proposal (PDDRP).
- New rules concerning geographic TLDs, including a prohibition on country names as gTLDs.
- New solutions to help facing all kind of problems that registers can have, especially in emergency case, if a prolonged Registry technical problem happens.
- A model for providing centralized zone file access (ZFA) in order to help fighting against malicious behaviors.
- A revised base Registry agreement that will have to be signed between the future registries and ICANN.
The ICANN ads that among the documents accompanying this fourth version of the guidebook, two of them stay open for comments and remarks: a proposed New gTLD Program Budget, and a market/economy Study that should be soon released.
During the 38th ICANN meeting that will take place from June 20th to 25th in Brussels, several program session have already been planned in order to discuss different points to be improved. Among them is the brand management and their protection, when the age of new extensions has come.
By the end of the year, the 5th version of this guidebook should come out. Many hope it to be the ultimate version! Let’s see!
