.QUEBEC…When will it be ?   Latest news
It has been few months now that many associations such as MNQ (Mouvement national des Québécois et des Québécoises) or PointQuébec have been fighting so that the ICANN gives a .QUEBEC. to Quebec.

It should be remembered that Quebec is a small Province located in the east of Canada, with French as official language. Its actual extension, .QC.CA, is nothing but a subdomain created by the Canadian register (CIRA) to allow its provinces to be independent in the world of Internet. However, this is not enough. As Daniel Thurp, a representative and author of an online petition for a .QUEBEC underlines it: “What Catalogne accomplished lets me believe that French Canadians should be able to get their own identity and a visible presence on the Internet too”. French Canadian are dying to follow the path of Catalans (.CAT), or Martinique (.MQ), Guiana (.GF) etc., provinces who have been fighting in order to now have their own extension.

But this is not just a whim, French Canadians would have a lot to gain by getting a .QUEBEC, and on different levels.

First of all, it is important to note that their actual extension does not really belong to them : indeed, in order to register a QC.CA, it is compulsory to first register a .CA, which means that they can’t do anything without first going through .CA. Pretty complicated…

Also, a .QUEBEC would make it easier for Internet users by setting up apart right away French Canadians websites and Canadians websites. A big advantage considering the fact that both have a different culture and speak a different language.

Such an extension could help search engines from mixing up French Canadians and French companies too, since French Canadians websites would be immediately located. A relevant and effective method that would save time and would be very positive for the companies of this province.

The ICANN’s 38th international meeting is taking place right now in Brussels until June 25th, and is the perfect opportunity for Quebec to point its project out. According to the rules that the ICANN set up, to have the chance to get an extension, “The applicant necessarily has to prove that he has a strong methodology (…). It is necessary to have some definite economic prospects, like the control of a budget that guarantees the certainty and the continuity of a reliable register service in compliance with the rules of art of the world Internet ".

It is now Quebec’s turn to be convincing…
