Even though war to impose .XXX is not won yet, a step forward has been made during the ICANN’s last meeting in Brussels few days ago.
The IMC Registry has been fighting for nearly six years to create a .XXX, a top level domain that would host all the websites of a pornographic nature. But it was obvious that such an extension would be polemical.
Indeed, the conservative ones are scared that pornography becomes commonplace and popular online because of it. But the supporters of this extension don’t see it through the same eyes: a top level domain dedicated to pornography would enable authorities to stigmatize adults websites, and so, to have a better control over them and maybe censure them.
After several refusals, the ICANN finally gave the initial approval to create a .XXX. The international organization probably changed her mind according to polls and “numbers” : 370 millions of porn websites are to be on the Internet, and a recent study made by the IMC Registry also indicates that there are about 110 000 “pré-réservations” for .XXX domain names.
In front of a guaranteed success, the ICANN decided to give its first green light to move forwards. Martijn Pakker, ICANN’s spokesman, is quite positive: “The domain name has not yet been approved, but it moves forward under a fast-track process”.
However, the final decision should be given by the GAC ( the « Governmental Advisory Committee ») and shouldn’t be revealed before next December when the next ICANN meeting takes place. The top level domain still has to wait…
